The Spaced Invaders are a turntable crew that brings incredible amounts of energy to every show they play. This Tour de Funk consists of mixing all forms of new age multi-media, with old school ideas and philosophies. They use vinyl records to control not only the music that they play, but to control the interactive video displays also. This creates the ability for the Spaced Invaders to take some of our most culturally, iconic movies and remix them in with the music right before the crowd’s eyes. There is more to a show than fancy bells and whistles. Their shows are about crowd interaction. They encourage the crowd to dance and partake in the show. The Invaders accomplish this by superimposing people dancing in the crowd in with the video mix, or by placing someone’s Happy Birthday message or shout out on the big screens. This sort of crowd interaction is the next level in music performance and the Spaced Invaders bring it to the public with ease.
The Spaced Invaders formed just nearly six months ago, and have already played to thousands. They have rocked various venues and parties such as The Music Farm, Kulture Klash, and The Side Show Fashion Show. In addition to the parties and events, the crew is called upon to provide visuals and to be a support act to various bands and musical artists. Such bands include The 33’s, Ballyhoo, On the Hunt, Virus, NRG, and Quasiphonics, and Dub Island Sound System. Their ability to manipulate the turntables has helped them to be integral parts of other acts as well. DJ Flatbroke, for example, plays with the funk group, Magic Bronson. Where as DJ Sonar has performed with The Nappy Roots, and is called upon to produce mixtapes of various artists’ music.
The crew also has a very philanthropic side as well, they performed at the Stop the Violence South event, WyldeFest, and College of Charleston’s RED event. They also have fine tuned a way to use laser beams to produce graffiti onto walls. Unlike traditional graffiti, which lasts until it is painted over, laser graffiti is not permanent and allows the artist to "tag" buildings even up to hundreds of yards away.
At the end of June of 2008, the Spaced Invaders, released their first Stone Groove podcast. The podcasts were a welcome feature to the group and allowed both DJ Flatbroke and DJ Sonar to feature the depth of musical knowledge, music history, technical skills, and turntablist styles that both of them possess. iTunes immediately picked up the podcast and fans began tuning in. One fan described it as, "The only podcast to hear Krs-One, James Brown, and Beck in the mix." The podcasts are religiously released on the first and fifteenth of every month (those were affectionately called the "Payday Podcasts.")
